7.5x55 Swiss Detailed Review: Pros and Cons of the 7.5x55 Swiss

There's something special about old cartridges with history, especially when you get to use them, and they still perform just as well as modern variants. One such cartridge is the 7.5x55mm Swiss. Also known as the GP11, this thing is extremely accurate and very popular in Europe for hunting and target shooting. With its rich history and excellent performance, it's easy to see why so many love it. Now let's dive into some of the advantages and disadvantages.

Pros:

  1. Great Accuracy: One of the reasons this cartridge is so well known is due to its excellent accuracy. For an older cartridge, it can sure hold its own and will excel as a long-range hunting round or for long distance shooting.

  2. Low Recoil: Another huge benefit of the 7.5x55mm Swiss is that there's hardly any recoil. This not only makes it more enjoyable to shoot, but it can also help to be more accurate. What's not to love?

  3. Good Energy: The 7.5x55mm Swiss can carry some energy, even out to longer distances. This makes it a great choice for hunting medium to large game, even tougher animals like elk.

  4. Decent Bullet Selection: While not as popular as something like a .308 or 6.5 Creedmoor, there's still a dedicated group of people who shoot this thing. So, thanks to this popularity, there's a decent variety of bullet options and weights out there to give you exactly what you are looking for.

Cons:

  1. Limited Availability: Ok I know we just listed this as a pro, but hear me out. While yes, the 7.5x55 Swiss is popular and you have a wide selection of bullets out there, that still doesn't mean its readily available no matter where you go. You will have to search a little harder than other calibers for ammo.

  2. Higher Cost: With more limited options often comes a higher cost of ammunition and reloading components, both of which are true for the 7.5x55mm Swiss. While still not outrageously priced, it's not super cheap either.

  3. Low Velocity: The 7.5x55mm Swiss can hold its own out to longer distances, but it has nowhere near the same speeds as other cartridges out there. If you want something super-fast, this might not be the one!

  4. Shorter Barrel Life: Wrapping up our list, the last con is its shorter barrel life. While every cartridge will eventually wear down a barrel, it seems that the Swiss tends to do it a little more often than others.

So after reading all of that, what are your thoughts on the 7.5x55mm Swiss cartridge? While it is a popular cartridge in Europe that is starting to see more and more traction in the states, it may or may not be the right choice for you.

But if you want a unique, low recoil cartridge that does well for hunting, then the 7.5x55 Swiss might be just the ticket!
